This is a two-year part-time programme, culminates in the award of a Higher National Certificate (HTQ) in Engineering. Designed for individuals pursuing a career in Mechanical Engineering. This level 4 qualification offers students with advanced knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of Mechanical Engineering, with a strong emphasis on its practical application within the industry. The HNC/HND in Engineering is specifically structured to support students progressing from vocational backgrounds, enabling them to build upon the competencies acquired at Level 3 and transition effectively into higher education. On completion of level 4 qualification, you will be eligible to enrol on the level 5 HND (HTQ).
Units have been distributed over two year period. During the first year of your study, you will be studying the following CORE units:
1. Engineering Design
2. Engineering Maths
3. Managing a professional Engineering Project
4. Production Engineering for Manufacture
Units would include planned projects within the college or industry placement.
During the second year of your study, you will be studying the following units:
1. Quality and Process Improvement
2. Mechanical Principles
3. Fluid Mechanics
4. Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines
Standard entry to this course requires:
1. Minimum of 32 UCAS points from a recognised level 3 qualification in a related subject (eg. T-Level, BTEC National or A-levels or
equivalent) Or
2. Higher level qualification in an unrelated subject area.
3. You are expected to hold GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 and above or any equivalent qualification.
We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate the ability to study this subject at university level and who can evidence relevant experience. An interview is required to ascertain prior achievement.

For some practical activities you may need to provide your own PPE.
On successful completion of the HNC (HTQ) course, you may continue to the level 5 HND (HTQ). Once you have achieved the HND, you will be able to apply to study further year to obtain a full degree at university. This qualification is well regarded throughout the industry and the academic world. Career opportunities include managerial and technical positions in Mechanical or electrical engineering.
