Pattern cutting may seem complex and daunting however the aim of this course is to give you a centred and hands-on approach to the subject. The course has a back-to-basics approach to explain the processes, allowing plenty of practice and time for you to gain feedback on your skills and development. This course is ideal if you would like to start developing patterns for garments. No previous experience is necessary as the course will cover all the basics of pattern cutting. Taking place in the afternoons, this is a part-time, seven-week programme for adults only. It is intended as a hobby course but can lead to more industrial skills through progression onto our other part-time garment designing/sampling courses.
The course covers pattern making terms and equipment as well as pattern development in a style that understands the relationship between 2D patterns and 3D garments. Learn how to use pattern cutting equipment correctly and utilise templates to produce patterns. You will also recognise how to take measurements correctly, draft a basic block, practice lay planning, and discover how to assemble a garment.
Interest in industry or amateur garment construction, sampling or pattern cutting. You cannot apply for this course if you have already completed it with Leicester College
You will be introduced to techniques through group demonstrations and benefit from individual feedback. There is no formal assessment but you will be set personal targets from your tutor.
