This course runs at St Margaret's campus each Thursday from 1pm - 4pm for 7 weeks, starting on 16th January and ending on 6th March 2025. This exciting 7 week course aims to build on basic skills and advance the knowledge required in the production of intermediate level leather craft items that can be used for decorative or practical purposes. Building on basic skills, you will be instructed in pattern production for your item, before advancing to the processes of cutting, preparation, stitching, finishing and embellishment relevant to this level of work. Alongside this, you will be instructed in the use of intermediate level hand tools, techniques, and products. As you progress, these skills will enable you to produce further advanced and Individualised craftwork. Alongside subject specific skills, the course is designed to enable a return to education and prepare for further learning or employment, build your confidence, or look after your health and well-being.
Throughout the seven-week programme, you will be instructed in the various aspects of leather craft to produce various intermediate leather craft items. The syllabus will include: - Types of Leather, Materials, and suitability for intermediate items. - Pattern production techniques. - Cutting techniques and equipment choices. - Methods of skiving by machine and hand. - Awl work. - Methods of Stitching. - Tool uses and requirements intermediate work. - Tooling of Leather. - Decorative finishing techniques. - Health and Safety in leather crafts. - Health and Safety in the Workshop.
No previous experience is necessary, just an interest in the subject.
There are no assessments or exams. Your tutor will support and guide you through the course and help you develop your skills through one-to-one feedback.
- Annual Tuition fee: £25
However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits: - Universal Credit - JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group) There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,000.
You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study. For enrol and pay courses: Once you have decided to take the course, you need to fill in a short learner details form online and pay the course fee. Once you have done this, you will receive an electronic confirmation of enrolment and payment.
