This non-accredited course is delivered at St Margaret's Campus and takes place each Tuesday from 9:30am to 12:00pm for 9 weeks, starting on 8 September and finishing on 10 November 2026.
This course is designed for beginners and those who would like to learn the basics of sewing. Each week, you will be guided through a small sewing project, such as creating your own needle case, piped pin cushion, or zippered purse.
This is a tutor-led course designed to develop your sewing machine skills, including the use of the various feet and attachments that come with it.
During this course, you will learn:
- Health and safety, safe working practice regulations
- You will learn to identify and understand the functions and workings of the sewing machine, troubleshoot, and identify machine faults.
- Understand the different types and sizes of needles
- Understand fabric properties of woven and Stretch fabrics and how to successfully sew them.
- You will learn how to sew zips and create buttonholes. Make a cushion cover with an applique. How to sew reversible projects
- Identifying and using an assortment of machine feet
This course is an introduction to basic sewing skills. Each week, you will work on a simple project to develop your sewing skills and learn how to use a sewing machine with confidence.
This course is designed as an introduction to sewing skills and is suitable for beginners and for those who have not previously completed a sewing or garment-making course.
You will need to be able to use scissors and sewing equipment safely and independently on this course.
You must be aged 19 or over and be able to complete a short workbook each week with support from your tutor.
- Annual Tuition fee: £90
The cost of the course is £90.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- Job Seekers Allowance (JSA)
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA - Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if your annual income is less than £26,800.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress to our Introduction to Garment Making course or one of our other Adult Engagement and Progression courses.
Your tutor will discuss the various progression routes available to you and provide advice on your next steps. You can also access support from the College Careers Team to help with your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
