This non-accredited course runs from St Margaret's Campus every Friday 10 am – 12:30 pm, starting on 2 May and finishing on 11 July 2025 for 10 weeks.
This course builds upon your existing knowledge, equipping you with additional techniques.
You will work on an individual project using commercial patterns or make your own patterns depending on your experience.
You will be required to bring some of your own materials and sewing equipment to each session.
Ideally, you will have completed Improvers 1 and 2 before enrolling onto Improvers 3 or have substantial prior sewing experience.
During this course, you will:
- Work on individual projects using commercial patterns or make your own blocks then working them into patterns
- You will work with more challenging fabrics
- Identify different types of fabrics, research the origin of certain fabrics, and how best to sew them
- Sew with lace and chiffon fabrics
- Attach lining to a garment, choosing suitable fabrics for the lining and use the bagging out method for a seamless finish
- Sew using the burrito roll method
- Look at couture sewing techniques
This course is designed for those who have completed introduction to garment making skills and is suitable for those students who have previous sewing experience.
You must be aged 19+ and be able to complete a short workbook on a weekly basis with the help of your tutor.
- Annual Tuition fee: £100
The cost of the course is £100.00. However, you will not be required to pay a fee for this course if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:
- Universal Credit
- JSA or ESA (Employment and Support Allowance Work Related Action Group)
There will be no fees if you earn less than £25,000.
You can only complete this course once.
On completion of this course, you may progress onto one of the other adult short courses, such as Soft Furnishings or Upholstery. Or it might inspire you to enrol on to one of our full-time fashion or design based programs.
Your tutor will advise and discuss the various progression routes available to you. You can also access the college careers team to support your progression.
Apply online via the College website. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required or sent a conditional offer according to the course's entry requirements. You will then be invited to enrol for your chosen course.
