The IMI Level 1 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness is a short, part-time course designed for anyone who works with, around or has an interest in electric and hybrid vehicles. The qualification provides an introduction to electric and hybrid vehicle technology, including the different types of vehicles, their main components and the potential hazards associated with high-voltage systems.
This course is particularly suitable for people working in the automotive industry who do not carry out repairs on high-voltage systems but may come into contact with electric or hybrid vehicles. This may include vehicle technicians, valeters, recovery staff, parts staff, sales teams, fleet employees, drivers and other automotive personnel.
No previous electric vehicle experience is required. Successful completion leads to an industry-recognised IMI Level 1 qualification and can provide a useful first step towards further electric and hybrid vehicle training.
During the course, you will develop an understanding of the different types of electric and hybrid vehicles and how they can be identified. You will learn about the basic operating principles of electric and hybrid vehicles and become familiar with key components, including high-voltage batteries, electrical cables, charging systems and associated warning labels.
You will also explore the hazards associated with high-energy electrical systems and learn how to work safely around electric and hybrid vehicles. This includes understanding electrical risks, stored energy, vehicle charging, damaged vehicles and appropriate safety precautions.
The course focuses on awareness and safe working practices. It does not qualify you to isolate, service or repair high-voltage vehicle systems, but it will help you recognise potential hazards and understand when work should be referred to a suitably qualified electric vehicle technician.
N/A
There are no formal entry requirements for this course.
You do not need previous experience of electric or hybrid vehicles, although an interest in the automotive industry would be beneficial.

- Exam registration fee: £43
- Annual Tuition fee: £150
Successful completion of this qualification provides a useful introduction to electric and hybrid vehicle technology and can support progression within the rapidly changing automotive industry.
The course may benefit people working in vehicle sales, parts departments, vehicle valeting, recovery, fleet operations, vehicle rental, body repair, motor vehicle workshops and other roles where employees may come into contact with electric or hybrid vehicles.
Learners wishing to develop their technical skills further may progress to higher-level IMI electric and hybrid vehicle qualifications. These can include qualifications covering routine maintenance, high-voltage system repair, component replacement, diagnostics and advanced electric vehicle systems.
The qualification can also complement other Motor Vehicle qualifications and continuing professional development for people already employed within the automotive sector.
