Our plumbing course is part of the Education Programme for Young People (EPYP). It's for school leavers and anyone under 19.
This course is for students interested in plumbing careers in building services engineering. Keep in mind that this qualification won’t make you a fully qualified plumber. It helps you learn and practice skills for jobs or apprenticeships in plumbing.
In this course, if you didn't get a grade 4 or higher, you can retake your GCSES. You can also choose to take Functional Skills in English and maths.
You will also take part in activities that build personal skills like character and confidence. These skills are key for living well and advancing your career. If you're 16 to 19 years old, these activities will fit into your weekly schedule. You will also get work experience or a placement during your studies. Plus, you can join other enrichment activities at the college.
There are ten units:
- Health and safety in building services engineering.
- Electrical principles and processes for building services engineering.
- Scientific principles of plumbing in homes, industry, and commerce.
- Common plumbing processes.
- Cold water systems.
- Domestic hot water systems.
- Drainage systems.
- Sanitation.
- Central heating systems.
- Communication in building services engineering.
You will learn theory in classrooms. Also, you will have custom workshops to build practical skills and do assessments.
Entry to this course requires one reference. You should demonstrate a minimum of 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. You need a GCSE in English and maths, each at grade 3 or higher. You also need two more GCSEs at grade 3 or above. One of these must be a science or a technical subject.
Students who studied with us need a level 1 Diploma in Plumbing or a level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills (BSE). They also need English and math at grade 3 minimum or equivalent Functional Skills.
All students will undertake a monitoring period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, attitude, attainment, and application toward study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your first six weeks.
- Material fee: £150
- Annual Tuition fee: £0
You will be required to purchase some basic equipment to support your learning and protect you during normal working practice in the workshop. Approximate combined cost for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and tool kit of £85. Previous Leicester College students may only require a top-up tool kit at a reduced cost. You will be advised what is required during the application process. There may be an additional examination registration fee of approximately £155.00 if applicable. Re-sits for applicable examinations are chargeable.
This course has been designed to deliver a high level of occupational skills and provide a platform from which to progress into an apprenticeship or directly into employment. This vocational route at level 2 is a vital step towards becoming a competent plumber.
After certification, enrolment onto an appropriate level 3 programme (T-Level) may be possible if you meet the entry criteria, subject to availability.
Apply online via the College website, or if your school uses the Positive Steps @16 (PS16) application system please apply through this and speak to your careers advisor if you are unsure. You will be contacted to attend an interview if required, or you will be sent a conditional offer according to the entry requirements for the course. You will then be invited in to enrol for your chosen course of study.
