This course is for NHS UHL or LPT staff members only. If you do not work for UHL or LPT, please apply to adult functional skills English (course code M00008) or adult functional skills maths (course code M00009).
The Functional Skills English and maths Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications are designed to improve practical abilities and build confidence for everyday life and the workplace. Delivered in an intensive format, each course runs once a week for either 5 weeks or 7 weeks, providing a focused and supportive learning experience.
Weekly sessions aim to develop real-world communication and numeracy skills. The English course enhances both spoken and written communication, while the maths course focuses on applying essential numeracy in practical situations such as budgeting, measuring, and problem-solving.
These nationally recognised qualifications are accepted by colleges and employers, demonstrating your competence in English and maths.
Functional Skills English includes three components: Speaking and Listening, Reading, and Writing. Strengthening these areas can significantly boost your confidence and ability to work independently and accurately. Throughout the course, you will develop your communication skills—participating in group discussions, understanding a variety of texts, and improving your writing through accurate spelling, punctuation, and grammar. At levels 1 and 2, you'll also focus on advanced discussion and presentation skills, and the ability to read and write using a range of formats with accuracy. To gain the full qualification, all three components must be successfully passed.
Functional Skills maths focuses on core numeracy skills such as working with numbers, handling data, and solving practical problems related to everyday life and work. You'll build confidence in tasks like budgeting, measuring, interpreting information, and applying logical problem-solving techniques. The course is designed to help you think mathematically and apply concepts effectively in real-world contexts.
Both qualifications are recognised by colleges and employers, equipping you with the practical skills and confidence needed for further education, employment, or daily life.
These courses are designed specifically for adults working for UHL or LPT, and you must be aged 19 or over as of 1st September.
There are no formal entry requirements, however, you’ll complete an initial assessment to determine your current skill level and identify the most suitable level for you to begin working towards.
Full attendance is essential, and you’ll also be expected to commit at least 2 hours per week to independent study to successfully complete the course within the set time frame. In most cases, our classes are free of charge—provided you do not already hold a GCSE grade A*-C (grade 4 or above) in the subject.
Upon achieving Level 1, you can progress to the Level 2 qualification in both Functional Skills English and Maths, further developing your confidence and ability in these essential areas.
Completing these courses not only improves your ability to handle detailed and complex written tasks but also enhances your overall communication and numeracy skills. This can lead to more accurate, professional, and efficient handling of everyday responsibilities—whether you're interpreting data, managing documents, or engaging in workplace communication.
Improving your English and maths skills through these qualifications can open new career opportunities, support career progression, and increase access to further education or training.
Please apply online and we will contact you to come in for an initial assessment to check what level your skills are. Following initial assessment, we will offer you a suitable class or advise on next steps.
