The Level 2 Certificate in Food and Beverage Service is designed for learners who enjoy working with people and want to build a career in the hospitality industry. This practical course will develop the skills, knowledge and confidence required to work in front of house roles within restaurants, hotels and other hospitality venues.
You will gain hands-on experience in Taste, Leicester College's commercial training restaurant, serving customers in a realistic working environment while learning the high standards expected by the hospitality industry. Throughout the course, you will develop excellent customer service skills, food and beverage knowledge, teamwork and professionalism, preparing you for employment or further study.
If you are aged 16–18, you will be enrolled on a study programme which will include retaking GCSE English and/or maths if you have not already achieved the required grade. You will also complete work experience and an employability programme to help prepare you for the workplace.
This course combines practical restaurant service with the knowledge needed to succeed in the hospitality industry.
Working in Taste, Leicester College's commercial training restaurant, you will gain first-hand experience of serving customers in a professional restaurant environment. You will develop the confidence, communication and customer service skills expected by employers while working alongside professional chefs to deliver an exceptional dining experience.
You will learn a wide range of food and beverage service techniques, develop your knowledge of menus and beverages, understand current food safety and licensing legislation, and learn how to deliver excellent customer service. Alongside your practical skills, you will develop teamwork, organisation, problem-solving and communication skills that are essential within the hospitality industry.
As part of your study programme, you will also complete a work placement within the hospitality industry, giving you valuable experience and helping prepare you for employment.

Direct entry requires GCSE English Language and GCSE maths at grade 3 (D) or above.
All applicants will be invited to attend a Welcome Event or interview, where you will meet your tutors, discuss your career aspirations and ensure the course is the right choice for you.
Applicants with relevant hospitality experience or a Level 1 Hospitality or Professional Cookery qualification are also encouraged to apply.

You will be required to purchase a hospitality uniform suitable for restaurant service. Details of approved suppliers will be provided before enrolment.
There will also be opportunities to participate in educational visits, employer masterclasses and hospitality events throughout the year. Some enrichment activities may involve a small additional cost.
Financial support towards course-related costs may be available through the Learner Support Fund, subject to eligibility based on household income. Our Student Services team can provide advice and guidance on the support available.
There is the opportunity to progress onto the level 3 Food and Beverage Supervision course or an advanced apprenticeship programme the following year. This course may also lead to you gaining employment in a fine dining restaurant or hotel within the industry where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have gained on your programme.
Apply online via UCAS Progress or the College website. You will need details of your qualifications, a reference, and a personal statement to complete your application. Once your application has been successfully processed, you will be sent a conditional offer and be invited to a Welcome Event at the College to meet your tutors, learn more about your chosen course of study and tour the facilities. You will then need to confirm your acceptance of the course offered to you.
