Achieve an English Functional Skills qualification at Level 1 or 2 at Summer School. This is a 2-week Intensive course starting 30th June, running from 9.30am to 3pm each day. The exam will be on Friday 11th July 2025. You must be available to attend all sessions and complete work independently and on time. Functional skills are practical and applied skills in English which allow you to work confidently, effectively and independently at home and at work. It is a recognised qualification by colleges and employers. This course is perfect for you if you already have very strong underpinning English skills but require development to apply those skills and techniques effectively to secure an accredited qualification.
Level 1 and level 2 Functional Skills are designed to develop the your ability to communicate effectively when reading, writing and speaking and listening. You will learn these skills using real-life practical contexts which provide a foundation for progression into employment or further education and develop skills for everyday life. To achieve the full Functional Skills qualification, a pass in all three units is required.
You must have strong underpinning skills at either level 1 or level 2 but require development of your functional skills. You must be able to attend every day of teaching and be available for the exam date. You must also be able to work independently for up to 3 hours per day during the course to get the qualification. You must be 19 or over on 31 August 2024, and not already hold a GCSE grade 4, or an equivalent qualification. Course placement will be dependent on an initial assessment. You may be signposted to a more suitable course on completion of your assessment. This course requires full attendance.
During the course, you will complete a discussion and a presentation, which will be assessed for the speaking and listening unit. At the end of the course you will complete two exams, one in reading and the other in writing. The reading and writing papers are externally assessed exams and you would normally receive your result within 4 weeks.
Apply online and you will be invited in for an initial assessment. Once you have taken this you will either be offered a place on this course or signposted to a course which is more suitable to your level.
