Tareq, a skilled and experienced surgeon working in Ukraine, was forced to leave the country due to the war. Determined to continue his medical career in the UK, he faced several challenges, including passing language proficiency exams and obtaining the necessary certifications. His decision to join Leicester College stemmed from his recognition of the importance of improving his English skills. He understood that proficiency in the language was crucial for passing the IELTS or OET exams, as well as subsequent PLAB 1 and 2 exams required for medical practice in the UK.
In September 2022, Tareq began his learning journey at Leicester College by enrolling in the evening ESOL classes at Entry 3 level. Recognising the need for dedicated effort, Tareq attended classes every day in Term 2. His dedication, commitment and hard work led to impressive achievement, as he successfully passed all ESOL exams at Level 2 by the end of the academic year. Tareq recognises the importance of continuous growth and development and is currently pursuing GCSE English.
While on his learning journey, Tareq also found an opportunity to give back to the community. He embraced the role of a volunteer, dedicating his time and skills to make a positive impact. Tareq’s involvement in community initiatives further demonstrated his compassion and desire to contribute beyond his professional aspirations.
Tareq commented on his learning journey: “If there is heaven on earth, it is the UK for me, especially Leicester College because teachers and students treat every person equally and with respect. I improved my English a lot and the staff at Leicester College have been very friendly. They have guided and motivated me. Even though I finished my ESOL classes, I still feel supported and can always talk to my teachers, ask for references and advice. I am confident and prepared to pursue my career”.
